Top 3 things to look for in a concrete contractor

Posted on

Concrete can be found in a huge number of environments, but it is most commonly found in industrial environments. Due to its durable nature, it is well suited to harsh and demanding buildings. Concrete is able to stand the wear and tear from heavy machinery and constant use, as well as being a cost effective solution. Concrete can also be made to look outstanding with concrete grindings, taking away a rough top layer to unveil a smooth and silky surface underneath.

With low barriers to entry however, there are lots of companies and contractors in the market who offer concrete grinding services. Selecting the right contractor is incredibly important. Once it has been set, concrete is difficult and time consuming to dig up - not something you want to be spending your money on.

If you are in the market for a contractor, here are the top three things you should be looking out for before hiring or signing a contract.

Cost effective rates

The majority of the costs of the project should come from time billed for manual work, not materials. Concrete is a cost effective building material, so be sure that you are paying for the work to be done. Some unscrupulous contractors may try to overcharge on materials, hoping you will not query the price. If in doubt, be sure to shop around for materials quotes to see if it would be cheaper to buy the concrete yourself and ask someone else to provide the installation.

Previous experience

There are requirements to entering the construction industry. The best way to judge a concrete contractor is from their previous work. Ask for recommendations from previous jobs, and if possible ask to view other projects they have worked on. A good contractor will be happy to share information and put your mind at ease, but be wary of anyone who can't provide these details. You should also run due diligence by checking the internet for any reviews you can find. There are many review sites, but make sure you look for recent reviews as well as older reviews to get a full picture.

Ongoing services

Unfortunately, it is never just as simple as laying a concrete floor and never thinking about it again. Your floor will need maintenance checks, require grinding for a better finish, or repair work if something goes wrong. Look for a contractor who can provide a range of services, and you will not need to go through the process of finding a new contractor each time you need a service.
