How to Pick a Skylight for Your Tiny Home

Posted on

Most traditional tiny homes have at least one skylight as part of their design plan. These skylights are usually located in the sleeping loft area of the home. This location means that you need to be careful of how you choose the right skylight for your tiny home. Here are some of the ways you can choose the right skylight for your home and for the weather you will be living in throughout the year.

Heat Resistance

One of the things you need to look for is the level of heat resistance the skylight has. Heat resistance can come from being a double-paned window, or the window may have special tinting. The reason this is important is that you will be in close proximity with the window while in the sleeping loft. Keep in mind that even if you are in a cold weather environment, the heat from the sun can come into the window and heat the entire loft area. This can be difficult to cool and may cause energy loss to the house as a whole. Make sure that the windows have a good energy rating and that they are heat resistant.

Slide Opening

There is very little space between your sleeping area and the skylight in most tiny home blueprints. This means that you will need to look for a window that has a slide opening rather than an opening going outwards or towards the inside. Proximity is one reason for this, the other reason is due to weather. Keep in mind that the pitch of most tiny home roofs is at an angle. This means there may not be enough clearance or room to open the window for cleaning or to allow air into the space.

Size

The size of the skylight matters for several reasons. One of the more obvious reasons is the smaller scale of the tiny home. Though this is the leading reason you need to be concerned with the size, the other deals with something vital, as well. The sleeping loft area can be ideal for the small space of the tiny home, but it can also leave you trapped during the night if a fire breaks out in the main part of the home. This means you need to have a skylight that is sized for you so you can exit from the skylight easily.

These are just a few of the ways you can use to help pick out a skylight for your tiny home. If you know you will be in a specific temperature environment, like extremely cold weather conditions, then you need to focus on those temperatures when you begin looking for a skylight. If you have specific needs, contact your local window contractor for assistance. They can help you choose what will work best for you.
