How to Add Security to Your Home Without a Pesky Alarm

Posted on

A high-tech alarm can be a great choice for securing your home and property, but some homeowners are uncomfortable with any type of complicated technology or may be afraid of a false alert from the alarm that disturbs the family and the neighbours. It can also be difficult for children to manage an alarm system, and you might want to allow housekeepers, dog walkers, and other people access to your home without worrying about them setting off the alarm! Whatever the reasons for wanting to avoid a home alarm system, note some other options for adding security to your home.

Security fencing

A standard chain link or hurricane fence that is just a few feet or meters tall is very easy for someone to climb so they can access your yard and home. A better option for added security is a solid panel fence that doesn't offer any type of mesh to grab. A taller fence is also harder to climb, so opt for a fence that is several feet or meters high so that a person has difficulty even accessing your yard, much less your home!

Tinted windows

Many residential burglars like to 'case' a house before they break in, meaning check inside the space so they know if someone is home, if there's something they can steal, how easy it would be to steal valuable items inside and then get out of the house, and so on. Window film can add security to the home by blocking the view of the inside; thick film can also help to keep windows intact if someone were to try to throw a brick or rock at the glass to shatter it.

Security doors and windows

Don't assume that your home's entryway doors or the standard locks you have on windows are enough to keep your home secure; many entryway doors don't fit their frame properly, leaving gaps large enough for a pry bar. The locks and hinges on these doors may also be a bit flimsy and easy to simply pop off the door or off the frame.

The same is true for many home windows, as their locks are often thin and lightweight and easy to force open. Old wood window frames can also be easy to crack with a simple pry bar. To keep your home secure, upgrade to security doors and windows, as these will have reinforced frames and locks, with no gaps for pry bars.
