Custom Features and Details to Discuss With Your Homebuilder

Posted on

When having a custom home built, you have the chance to decide on all the features you'll want to have added, and can also make changes to many standard features that are included in most home plans. Note what is meant by that, and some details to discuss with your homebuilder before any blueprints are drawn up for your new house.

Bathtub

Many luxury homes have large spa tubs, meant for soaking and relaxing. This can be good if you plan on actually using such a tub, but ask yourself how often you actually take a long, hot bath. If you're not the type of person to regularly soak in a tub, you might forego having a bathtub installed altogether, and opt for a walk-in shower instead. You can then have more space in the bathroom for storage, or you might expand the shower area to create a spa atmosphere, with a bench and multiple showerheads.

Closet

Many homes today have walk-in closets, but work with your homebuilder to create custom features that you need for your wardrobe in particular. For example, if the closet in the master bedroom or in a child's room will be shared, have it painted and decorated two different colours or themes, to help keep that space divided. If you travel often, you might want hooks that you can use to build outfits you'll need to pack, so you don't overlook any needed pieces. If your home won't have room for a large closet but you have a very generous wardrobe, talk to your builder about adding a spinning rack, as this can often hold more clothes in less space than a standard rod!

Artwork

If you have a collection of artwork, photos, or collectibles that you would like to show off in your new home, talk to your builder about how to add shelves, cubbyholes, display lighting, and other such details. A builder can even include trim work on walls that act like sorters and separators for your pieces, so you can display them in groupings, or have them stand out and get noticed while on display.

Your builder can also create areas of display around other items in the home; for example, they might build custom shelves around the television shelf in an entertainment centre, or forego a window in the dining room so you can display your oil paintings in that space. This will ensure those displays look planned and coordinated, and your home works for your style in particular.
