Two signs that it's time renovate your property's exterior

Posted on

There are several signs that may mean that it is time for you to have a contractor renovate your property's exterior. Carry on reading to discover what these signs are.

Your property's roof trusses are so damaged that the roof has started to sag

Roof trusses are long pieces of timber which help to support and keep the uppermost roofing materials in place. If as a result of damp-induced wet rot, termites or structural problems, the roof trusses sustain damage, the external section of the roof may begin to sag.

If this happens to your roof, you should have new roof trusses and new external roofing materials fitted as soon as possible, as a sagging roof won't just have a negative impact on the appearance of your home; it could also lead to serious water damage.

The reason for this is that if a section of the roof sags downwards, any rainwater that lands on this section will accumulate in the concave, sagging area, instead of simply running off the roof into the gutters like it usually does.

If this pooled rainwater doesn't evaporate fast enough, it may saturate the roofing materials to the point where they start to corrode or crumble (depending on what they are made from). If this happens repeatedly, holes may form in the damaged roof materials. These holes may then allow rainwater to flow into the roof's underlay materials or into the loft area of your property.

This could lead to the loft area becoming damp and mouldy. Repairing the damage caused by the damp could be both costly and time-consuming.

As such, if you can see that your home's roof trusses are deteriorating and that, as a result of this, your roof is starting to sag, it may be time to call a contractor from companies like Prefab Technology Pty Ltd to resolve this issue.

The exterior wall paint is peeling and cracking

If the paint on the walls of your home's exterior is peeling and cracking, then you should arrange for a tradesperson to strip off this old paint and add a few fresh coats to the walls as soon as possible.

Much like the above-mentioned sagging roof problem, this is more than just an aesthetic issue.

The paint that covers the exterior walls of your property isn't just designed to improve your home's appearance; it also slows down the rate at which the underlying construction materials (such as the concrete slabs or clay bricks) deteriorate. It does this by acting as a physical barrier that shields the bricks or concrete from rainwater, UV light, wind and extreme temperatures.

As such, if your home's exterior wall paint starts to peel off, or develops large cracks, and you fail to have the walls repainted promptly, the underlying construction materials may sustain damage. Concrete slabs may, for example, develop cracks, whilst clay bricks may begin to crumble.

Given this, it is important to act quickly if the paint on your property's exterior walls starts to deteriorate.
